"rendered": "\n
It’s a known fact that artists, musicians, tour and production teams, and other music professionals experience varied yet generally high levels of stress and anxiety in the music industry. The need to address mental health in music is critical — today and everyday. It’s a grueling industry during the best of times — one that requires an always-on mentality, a lot of time on the road, time spent away from home and sometimes families.
\n\n\n\n
Over the past couple months, COVID-19 has put shows, artist tours, and businesses on a standstill, including the adrenaline rush felt when on or behind stage. For many, now is a very quiet time, and we want to make you aware that there are support groups to prioritize your mental health and wellness. We spoke to some of our friends in the industry on advice and recommendations, and want to take this time to acknowledge the organizations who can help you, or someone you know, in time of need.
\n\n\n\n
We all share a love of music. Let’s help build a safer, stronger music community for all — today and for our future.
\n\n\n\n
Advice From Industry Friends
\n\n\n\n
Recognize your stress energy.
\n\n\n\n
Elliot Aranow, founder of The OUR SHOW Academy, a conversational and editorial platform that creates connections between the worlds of creativity and culture and self realization and mental health, says that it’s important to first and foremost acknowledge the anxiety and stress. When it’s ignored and we try to push it away, it comes back “harder, meaner, and more often.” Take a moment to observe and say, “Wow, this is really scary for me.” Just saying that piece can be liberating.
\n\n\n\n
A lot of the times we — as humans, artists, professionals — judge ourselves for being stressed. Haven’t you been there? Let’s be kinder to ourselves.
\n\n\n\n
Create some small, repeatable wins for yourself every day!
\n\n\n\n
You don’t need to be able to do it all. Maybe meditate for a few minutes a day, or a week, for that matter. Set small goals and what would be considered a “win.” Elliot says, “Find something you like, and try to do it for ten minutes a day, whether that is meditating, running, drawing, practicing scales, whatever. The most important thing is to feel good. Don’t worry about what other people are doing. Do what feels good to you and try to do it everyday. Make it a fun routine.”
\n\n\n\n
It’s ok to be still.
\n\n\n\n
Elliot adds, “Conversely, it’s TOTALLY OKAY to not want to do anything and to feel unmotivated. This is a weird time for all of us.” Some days you’ll want to do it all, other days you’ll want to take it slower. And that’s okay. Cut yourself some slack.”
\n\n\n\n
Nicole Blonder, co-founder of equilibrium, an initiative focused on mental health and wellness in music says, “It’s important not to shame yourself for not making fast changes or being productive ‘enough’.” If you are trying to build a new habit, connect with the habit first, think about it intentionally and what you want to gain from it.
\n\n\n\n
Marni Wandner, co-founder of equilibrium says that while some may have more time than normal these days — as opposed to essential workers, parents, and caretakers — it’s a necessary time to focus on our mental health and slow down. “It can be a lot more comfortable for most of us to stay busy all the time. Yes, I think it’s an awesome time to tackle those things that we haven’t had the time to do. But I do think we also need to remind ourselves daily to use some of our time and space for stillness the same way we do for projects. They’re both equally important.
\n\n\n\n
Assign an accountability partner to check in with.
\n\n\n\n
Find the right partner for you by asking a friend who you think would also benefit from being and having an accountability partner. This person is meant to help you with small steps. You can check in with this person throughout the day, in the morning or evening. Whether you want to set a goal, have a go to person to check in with daily, or share what you’re grateful for each day, an accountability partner will hold both of you…accountable. Plus, it’s an added bonus for the day.
\n\n\n\n
Remember to breathe. Use your body to relax your mind.
\n\n\n\n
Take deep, conscious belly breaths. We all know the importance of breathing. Marni explains the process: Start by taking a slow inhalation through your nose, visualize it filling up your belly, your back, then your chest. Make sure to keep your shoulders away from your ears. Hold the inhale for a few seconds and then let it out through your mouth with a whooshing sound. Let out all the air in your lungs and attempt to exhale twice as long as you inhale. Here is the 4-7-8 breathing exercise, which this exercise is based on.
\n\n\n\n
Similarly to calm down the nervous system, Elliot inhales for 5 counts, holds that breath for 5 seconds, then exhales for ten counts. You can also try counting up to 5 and then back down, alternating between inhaling and exhaling. “I find that giving my brain a job helps me to focus and allow the breathing do its thing.”
\n\n\n\n
If it’s your thing, find a few minutes to exercise.
\n\n\n\n
Marni and Nicole say they love participating in home workouts. These can be in the morning or mini workshops throughout the day to alleviate stress or get you moving if you’re feeling like you need to stretch and move the body. From free online yoga classes to YouTube workouts and everything in between, exercise releases endorphins and reduces levels of stress hormones in the body — sometimes a little movement is all you need to hit the reset button.
\n\n\n\n
Take media breaks.
\n\n\n\n
This is a stressful, unprecedented time in our life. From a few hours to a few days, be sure to take media breaks. Nicole encourages, “It’s important to create space in our brains for things other than this crazy situation we’re living in.”
\n\n\n\n
Jot it down.
\n\n\n\n
Marni says, “You know when you’re stressed but you’re not quite sure why and your brain feels like a big bowl of soup?” Yes, we get that feeling. “This is usually when I’ll just start writing, and I will tell you — I never know what’s going to come out until it does. More often than not, I’ll either unlock a little thing I didn’t know was bothering me, or I’ll just feel better having gotten all my thoughts out of my head and onto the page.”
\n\n\n\n

It’s important to create space in our brains for things other than this crazy situation we’re living in. – equilibrium

\n\n\n\n
Join an online support group.
\n\n\n\n
There are several online groups out there that focus on recovery, stress reduction, anxiety, and more. If you’re interested in learning more about Elliot’s support group, you can DM him on Instagram to learn about upcoming sessions. “I know how scary it can be to be vulnerable,” says Elliot, “But feeling the fear and talking about it is really the best path to get better.”
\n\n\n\n
Set some sort of routine.
\n\n\n\n
Chris Bullard, the founder of Sound Mind, an organization with the mission to end the stigma that surrounds mental health and mental illness through the power of music, says for him it’s important to set some sort of routine. “I firmly believe routine is helpful in mental health no matter what. This is a new world we’re living in, so now my routine is new. I go on a walk every morning. Because things can tend to blend into one another, I make sure to stop work and go for a run or play music at a certain hour to break up the day.
\n\n\n\n
Connection and connecting.
\n\n\n\n
It’s important to connect and stay connected with other people. “My family is in Los Angeles and I feel fortunate that I am able to connect with them even more during this time,” Chris says. “We’re all in this together. There’s physical distancing but actually, socially, we are becoming closer through all this.
\n\n\n\n
Repeat a mantra. Some from our friends include:
\n\n\n\n
Be gentle. Soften. Rest often.
\n\n\n\n
I am safe. Everything is working out for me. It’s safe for me to be seen and take up space.
\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\n
Organizations For Support
\n\n\n\n
Backline
\n\n\n\n
What The Organization is About
\n\n\n\n
Backline literally is your backline. Backline is an organization dedicated to connect music industry professionals and their family members with a trusted network of mental health and wellness providers.
\n\n\n\n
This summer the organization had plans to tour festivals and offer mental health support onsite for artists, tour, and music professionals. At these festivals, they would lead workshops on mental health and wellness and take part in other beneficial programming. With the onset of COVID-19, the organization had to shift gears a bit to try to break the mental health stigma and make it a more talked about issue as part of the greater industry. Nowadays, Backline’s mission has stayed the same throughout COVID-19, even though their format and delivery methods have changed.
\n\n\n\n
For those who don’t know, Backline has a clinical team that works 1:1 with individuals to navigate the mental health care system and connect with the appropriate resources. It can feel challenging to find the right help — they know that sometimes getting started is the hardest part.
\n\n\n\n
Kendall, Co-founder and Director of Operations & Partnerships of Backline, says there is a silver lining — the music industry will probably never have this amount of free time again, which makes it an important time to address mental health. Touring professionals are used to ongoing structure and routine. Between travel, rehearsals, soundcheck, shows, and back on the road, touring professionals rarely have time to check in with themselves.
\n\n\n\n
“This is a rare opportunity to enhance skill sets and learn new practices, especially ones that better mental health and wellness in the long term.” Kendall says that the reintegration period is going to be a shock for many that are able to return to road life when that time comes, which will revert back to long hours and some unrealistic expectations. We need to make sure the music industry returns to work with new tools for a stronger overall workplace.
\n\n\n\n

“This is a rare opportunity to enhance skill sets and learn new practices, especially ones that better mental health and wellness in the long term. – Backline

\n\n\n\n
Tools To Help
\n\n\n\n
If you find that you need some support, fill out Backline’s secure submission form online. Backline will reply immediately with a scheduling link and you’ll be connected to a case manager. The case manager will walk you through next best steps and practices. Backline offers trusted support and clinical providers catered specifically to the needs of the individual.
\n\n\n\n
During the month of April, Backline will be offering free programming on their Instagram featuring practitioners and experts who want to use their platform to further deliver the Backline message.
\n\n\n\n
Kendall says, “In response to these unprecedented times of self isolation, financial insecurity, and industry fallout, we’ve launched the ‘Come Together: Crisis Initiative,‘ which includes bi-weekly support groups, yoga, meditation, and breathwork sessions in partnership with like-minded organizations, including The Tour Health Research Initiative, Frequency, Fit On Tour, and more. Meditation sessions are led by Frequency’s Alexa Alianiello. These meditations will help participants return to the breath and body, release tension and anxiety, and reconnect with community. Frequency Co-Founder Vivian Rosenthal will lead breathwork sessions, which gives participants an opportunity to relieve stress, anxiety, and tension that has been stored in the body.
\n\n\n\n
All of these sessions are available for free and welcome anyone in the music industry to join.
\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n
The OUR SHOW Academy
\n\n\n\n
What The Organization Is About
\n\n\n\n
When Elliot Aranow, magazine editor, writer, creative director and fashion designer, started his journey, no one was really talking about mental health the way it is talked about right now. The OUR SHOW Academy was started, after many years of deep work, as a way for creatives to understand their minds and get mental health support.
\n\n\n\n
Elliot says that when we feel safe and supported, our best ideas can flow and we can tap into our inner genius. He believes this period of time may result in a shift in prioritizing mental health for the music industry — or at least he hopes so. “I think that there needs to be a big overhaul at the label, manager, and administrative levels. We need more handlers and overseers being educated in mental health and what signs to look out for, resources for addiction, etc. It’s a great time to level up before everyone hits the road again.”
\n\n\n\n
Tools To Help
\n\n\n\n

Elliot offers daily content on Instagram and a weekly newsletter (sign up here!) that talks all about the relationship between creativity and mental health.

Sean Hotchkiss and Elliot host a weekly support/community group for men on Zoom every Thursday at 8PM EDT. For them that means building community and open dialogue by bringing together a coalition of artists and mental health organizations to really build community and ongoing dialogue. “It’s important to speak about mental health, as it’s something we don’t speak about often in society. Music has this unique ability to connect with others, bring people together, and open up hearts and conversations.” Sound Mind leverages the power of music to create better empathy around mental health, and through that, provide access and awareness of organizations who are providing more direct resources.
\n\n\n\n

Music has this unique ability to connect with others, bring people together, and open up hearts and conversations. – Sound Mind

\n\n\n\n
Already there are musicians predisposed to mental health issues. Now with tours being cancelled, financial strain and isolation, mental health issues can be sparked more easily.
\n\n\n\n
“When that kind of strain happens, even if you’re not having a health crisis in this pandemic, you’re likely to experience mental health issues. That can be isolation, predisposed mental health diagnosed conditions like anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, that can be a cause for these things to spring up as well.”
\n\n\n\n
Tools To Help
\n\n\n\n

On Thursday, April 16, Sound Mind presents their first Closer in Crisis Benefit Concert at 5pm PT / 8pm ET. She’s sold over 30 million albums worldwide. Writing songs and poetry saved Jewel’s life in more ways than one, having been thrown many obstacles her way in life. Jewel founded Never Broken, “an emotional fitness destination” that gives participants the tools and road map to help settle anxiety and some key practices to making happiness a habit and choice. Jewel says that we all have stories, we all have been on a journey. And while it’s tough and we’ve endured a lot, we are never broken; we have the choice to choose happiness.
\n\n\n\n
“Anxiety has been a teacher to me. It has caused me to learn there are only two basic states of being: dilated and contracted — and that every thought, feeling, and action led to one of those two states. Fear, anxiety, jealousy, anger, greed all led to contraction. Joy, curiosity, observation, love, gratitude all led to dilation. I learned that if I was headed into a panic attack, I could hack my way into a dilated state by focusing very hard on a different feeling. I chose gratitude. It’s amazing how profound such a single thing can be if you feel it deeply enough. It’s a practice I still use today.”
\n\n\n\n
Tools To Help
\n\n\n\n

To sign up for Never Broken, click this link to start your happiness journey. "rendered": "\n
Brooklyn-based South African bedroom synth indie pop artist Sulene, signed to Sleep Well Records, has toured the world as Nate Ruess of fun.s’ guitarist. Having scored for high profile shows, movies, and recognizable commercials, Sulene talks a lot about what makes a great pop artist. Her music, sonically depicted on her recent EP Fire Escaping, exemplifies what a great pop song is all about, embedding 80’s influenced drum beats, electrifying dancey vibes, and lyrics that share stories of love, loss, and heartbreak — wrapped up in a way that makes you get up and dance in your living room with a hairbrush. Just listen to ‘Diamond’ and you’ll get what we mean as Sulene dances through the much-loved venue staples of New York City.
\n\n\n\n
You talk about what it means to create a great pop song, “to say what has been said a million times, only in a way that’s never been said before.” Can you speak further on that point and how you put it in practice?
\n\n\n\n
When I think about making a pop song I think about creating something that is somewhat universal and relatable. But the next step for me is usually to think of a way to say something that’s been said before but in my own unique way. I think if you’re able to push yourself into a new territory, that’s when you can really bring something new to the table. A new perspective.
\n\n\n\n
Tell us about the various musical lanes you’ve taken in your career. How did you become a guitarist for the likes of Nate Ruess of fun. and Betty Who?
\n\n\n\n
I got these session musician gigs through recommendations from friends, actually. Both of those recommendations came from people I went to college with at Berklee. While I was never specifically trying to pursue being a session musician, I ended up doing those auditions and taking those gigs because I wanted to have new experience, and I certainly did! So once I got the recommendation and the initial call/audition, I tried to hit a home run with the gig. I learned everything as best I could and prepared a lot. Being a session musician in a band can also come down to “the hang”. You spend so much time in close quarters when you’re in a touring band so you’re also trying to make sure you’re working with like-minded people where it’s gonna be a good time. I really enjoyed making music with Jess from Betty Who and Nate and the whole band.
\n\n\n\n
Your sound is often described as “bedroom synth pop,” but how would you describe it to someone who has never heard your music?
\n\n\n\n
I would describe my music that’s out there as “bedroom synth pop” yes, but I’d describe my upcoming music as “dark gothic disco pop.”
\n\n\n\n

\n
When I think about making a pop song I think about creating something that is somewhat universal and relatable.
\n

\n\n\n\n
What first led you to film scoring? How has your film score/composing background helped you and influenced your solo music career?
\n\n\n\n
I studied film scoring in college and got a degree in composition. I wanted to be a film scorer since I heard Jon Brion’s score for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind. I liked the idea of writing music for a “mood” in a scene of a music. I’ve always been fascinated with how music makes you feel as opposed to the more technical side of it. That’s why I also ended up writing for commercials and TV in the process. It’s always about capturing a “vibe” and really influencing the audience to feel a certain way. Film scoring has made me a better producer and arranging, especially scoring for commercials where there’s a tight deadline. It’s also made me discover new tones and sounds. When I wrote for more artsy films I’m always pushing myself to discover new territory with my synth and guitars and pedals.
\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n
You recently released your sophomore EP Fire Escaping. What was the inspiration behind those tracks, both lyrically and sonically?
\n\n\n\n
The inspiration behind that one sonically was many things but definitely True Blue by Madonna. That was a big one haha. Lyrically, the songs are all about relationships. About falling in love, a bad breakup, and dating someone who wanted to be in an open relationship. I guess I was thinking about that stuff a lot at the time.
\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n
Describe what happens when you think of a new song, what comes first: the lyrics or the melody? How do you kick off that process?
\n\n\n\n
It’s usually just a concept as first. Like with ‘Diamond’, I just had the concept of finding someone like a “diamond in the rough.” Like a relationship that could be great. Kiss Harder’ was just the concept of “if we kiss harder could it be enough?” Nowadays, I actually start with the production first and then I sit back and listen to the musical idea and see what concepts it brings to mind.
\n\n\n\n
The music video for ‘Diamond’ sees you dancing through different four locations in Brooklyn and Manhattan, like Arlene’s Grocery, the BQE, The Three Diamond Door, and The Loft at Elsewhere. Why are these locations so special to you?
\n\n\n\n
They’re all special to me because they’re all places I spent a lot of time at. I wanted it to feel like I’m daydreaming of this person while I’m perusing (or dancing through) all these different spots in NYC where I usually hang. The BQE spot is the most significant to me though, it’s also where I shot all the promo photos. It’s on the block where my partner used to live, and we used to always walk by it and say it looks like such a “movie moment” and take photos of one another. A lot of this record is about falling in love and losing this person, etc, etc, love is complicated.
\n\n\n\n

\n\n

\n\n\n\n
What advice do you have for someone starting out their musical career?
\n\n\n\n
Be true to yourself. Don’t compare yourself to others. Don’t worry about what other people think. Be brave.
\n\n\n\n
If you could go back and change one thing about your journey, would you? If so, what would you change?
\n\n\n\n
Honestly, I wish I’d started making my own music sooner than I did. I started in 2016. Up until that point, I was really bogged down by financial and immigration situations. I had to work really hard to make enough to survive in NYC and also had to earn accolades to acquire my US visa. I know I did the best I could under these circumstances but sometimes it saddens me that I didn’t tap into my own voice for a long time.
\n\n\n\n
What is your favorite project you’ve ever worked on across all your ventures?
\n\n\n\n
I would say working on my solo music is the most fulfilling. But in terms of collaboration my favourite projects have been the two short films I scored for the director Jonathan Reyes (one of them is out, called After The End, the other isn’t out yet). My favourite band collab has been the new comedy band I’m in and producing called BRVNCHES which will launch in the new future.
\n\n\n\n
Who are some of your dream collaborations?
\n\n\n\n
Jon Brion, Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, Grimes, Porches.
\n\n\n\n
What can fans look forward to in the coming months?
\n\n\n\n
Lots of new music and videos!! And a tour once that’s doable again (the tour that had been booked has been postponed for now.)
\n\n\n\n
You have so many amazing talents that shine through your music and career. So, tell us, what’s one of your “useless” talents?
\n\n\n\n
I love this question!! My biggest useless talent is that I know literally everything about King of the Hill. You can ask me anything. I’d win a KOTH trivia contest any day.
\n\n\n\n

\n",

        "rendered": "\n
A little over a month ago, we were still making plans to attend shows and album release parties, adding tour dates into our calendar, and making plans with friends and family after work and weekends to support our favorite artists. But all that seems a little far away as the last few weeks, and specifically last few days, have been heavily inundated with the saddening news about the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the impact the virus is having on society — cities and towns across the globe both large and small, industries, the economy, and communities — severely impacting several pillars of everyday life for many, including music and entertainment.
\n\n\n\n
While all of this is chilling and hard to wrap our heads around, we have the power of music to connect through lyrics, chords, and powerful melodies — even while we have to listen and watch, likely alone, and definitely indoors. And thankfully, we also have technology to support our creative efforts. At The Orchard, we’ve used technology over the years to empower artists, giving them the tools, resources, and support to bring their music to fans worldwide. Now is most certainly the time to embrace the power of technology to strengthen, unite, and bring music communities together.
\n\n\n\n
Our team compiled helpful, proactive resources and methods of supporting the past, present, and future of the music industry, in an effort to stay calm and resilient during times of chaos and uncertainty. Knowledge is power and we will continue to add to this as more resources become available. Whether you’re in need or you know of someone in need, we hope you find peace knowing there are people and outlets for support.
\n\n\n\n
Where can I find the most up to date, accurate information about COVID-19?
\n\n\n\n
Simply put: the World Health Organization. Consistently updated, this is the most up to date, accurate place with information to keep you, your loved ones, and neighbors safe and healthy. It’s overwhelming reading all the news out there and different opinions. Stick with the World Health Organization to get what you need straight from the source.
\n\n\n\n
I’m an artist, what live streaming resources are available to me to perform for fans?
\n\n\n\n
Music Business and industry writer and expert Cherie Hu put together a free, 21-page comprehensive document of live streaming and other virtual resources for artists. Prior to the last few months, live streaming was added value for those who couldn’t attend concerts or other live events. It was used to further promote shows, leverage the world wide web to bring in fans across the globe. But, as Cherie says, it went from being a “niche” or “nice to have” format to “being imperative for ensuring global accessibility and reach amidst extreme conditions such as the COVID-19 outbreak.” As a means to connect the world through this difficult time as well as attempt to alleviate the devastation of cut tours and finances, live streaming of home concerts and more intimate shows or living room jams are already kicking off in full speed and will be something we’ll see artists utilizing a lot more of in the coming weeks.
\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n
I’m a fan, how can I help independent artists?
\n\n\n\n
Rev. Moose, founder of the Marauder agency and producer of Independent Venue Week in the United States, says that in an effort to help artists, many people are focusing on sourcing alternative revenue streams. Some of these include labels donating proceeds to artists, livestreams offering a way for fans to connect with artists and buy tickets for virtual shows, or donating to a fundraiser.
\n\n\n\n
He also says it’s important that people take note of their own personal ability to create change. “We can be responsible not only for where our own money is being spent as a consumer, but also the decisions that we guide others to make…It’s up to us as a community to create an economic support system for all levels of the creative industry that feed into our business.
\n\n\n\n
With that in mind, here are some ideas to help your favorite artists right now:
\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n
Be a music tastemaker. Share the artists you’re listening to with your colleagues by creating a playlist. You’ll feel more connected this way, especially now. Tune in to a livestream. Artists now are finding alternative means of sharing their live music and performances with fans from their home. Follow the artists you care about on socials and tune in to their performances. The more viewers, the more streams.
\n\n\n\n
Stream and buy music. Whether you’re working from home or taking an at-home yoga break, stream your favorite artists’ music. Artists rely heavily on touring and while this won’t equate to how much artists can make while on the road, it can and will help. Keep listening to music to feel connected. Want to support record stores? Here are some ways you can.
\n\n\n\n
Buy merch. You’ve been eyeing it, so now’s the time. As Independent Venue Week states, “Whether it’s pushing attention towards crowdfunding, putting catalog on sale, or just trying to steer the conversation, it feels like the industry as a whole sees how potentially dire this situation will be.”
\n\n\n\n
So how can the music community support independent venues during a time when all venues are supposed to close their doors until further notice?
\n\n\n\n
“We [at Independent Venue Week] are doing our best to provide a platform for peer support, so those on the front lines don’t feel like they’re completely alone. Handling every aspect of his music himself–songwriting, recording, instrumentation, mixing and even creating the cover art–the 21-year-old pours his heart and soul into his music, resulting in a deeply personal body of work. Accurately named for his genre-bending style, eli.’s fourth full-length album undefined. explores pain, self-doubt, and the freeing of himself from preconceived ideas and versions of himself. Her new EP Lost In June brings to life topics like identity, loneliness, strength, love, heartbreak, and loss. The EP evokes a sense of calmness and introspectiveness that we all could use right now. Millet has solidified her place in the world of UK R&B and is proving to be one of the year’s best new artists. Listen to the phenomenal EP Lost In June, out now.

\n\n\n\n

\n\n

\n\n\n\n
Sparta – Trust the River (Dine Alone Music)
\n\n\n\n
Back with their first album in almost fifteen years, Sparta is ready to jump right back into the rock scene. Led by one of rock’s most celebrated creatives Jim Ward, with help from bassist Matt Miller, guitarist Gabriel Gonzalez, and drummer Cully Symington, the band embarked on a long journey to create Trust the River. After many months of songwriting and recording, the band’s new album is the intersection of Ward’s experience in heavy rock bands and his more melancholic solo work. Trust the River is the result of all the members letting loose and having fun with music again. The album combines hope, regret, and everything in between, and packages it with power chords and fiery instrumentals. Be wowed by a blast from the past with a modern twist with Trust the River, out now.

\n\n\n\n

\n\n

\n",

It is with a heavy heart to learn of the passing of singer-songwriter John Prine, but while we mourn his loss, we will continue to listen to his music and spread his message of love and togetherness.
\n\n\n\n
In 2019, Prine was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and was nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the year prior. In 2015, he was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. He’s been a recipient of the PEN New England Lyrics Award, and he was to receive this year’s Icon Award at A2IM’s Libera Awards. In 2018, his album Tree of Forgiveness was nominated for Best Americana Album, while both his songs “Summer’s End” and “Knockin’ On Your Screen Door” were nominated for Best American Roots Song in the same year. Rolling Stone said the album was one of his greatest late career albums of all time.
\n\n\n\n
In 1981, Prine founded his own independent record label in Nashville, Oh Boy Records. For over 40 years, Oh Boy Records released Prine’s incredible records, alongside special signings and collaborations from modern country/folk artists such as Brandi Carlile, Jason Isbell, Dan Auerbach, and many more. Oh Boy Records stands as the longest running artist-owned independent label in Nashville, and the second oldest in the United States.
\n\n\n\n
We extend our deepest condolences to John Prine’s family and all those who were close to him. His music and distinct lyrics will be embedded in music history forever. "rendered": "\n
As an artist, when you feel off-balance and stressed, in the moment it may seem impossible to reset and come back into alignment. Although as humans we can’t change the emotions that arise, we can develop a new perception of our experience to transform tension into a state of equanimity.
\n\n\n\n
Awareness
\n\n\n\n
The first step is to become aware that you’re off balance. Awareness is one of the greatest tools for creating change. Once you become aware that you’re off-center, you have the opportunity to make a conscious choice to shift your internal state and redirect your energy and focus.
\n\n\n\n
Start each new day by closing your eyes, taking three deep breaths, and imagining that everything and everyone you approach is from a place of centered balance. Visualize seeing and feeling yourself moving effortlessly through every moment and experience with clarity, focus, and awareness. Allow this vision or sensation to become a guide for how you want to consciously move through each moment. How do you look? Are your eyebrows relaxed? Jaw relaxed? Shoulders back, down and relaxed? Notice how you begin to feel… more peaceful? More clear-minded?
\n\n\n\n
Action
\n\n\n\n
Where you place your attention is critical. Direct your attention on your breathing. Your breath is your greatest tool for getting out of the chaos of your head and into your heart. Taking deep, purposeful breaths that fill your entire being can help activate and soothe your parasympathetic nervous system which then gives you a sense of calmness and clarity. Alternate nostril breathing is a particular style of breathwork that consists of breathing through one nostril at a time.
\n\n\n\n
Instructions: Take your right hand thumb and ring finger (with pointer and middle finger facing down) and plug your right nostril with the thumb, breath in the left side nostril – hold – place the ring finger on the left nostril and breathe slowly out the right nostril. Keep left plugged, breathe in through right – hold – plug right and breathe out slowly through left nostril. Focus your attention on your chest rising and falling, the air filling the belly, or the air flowing through your nostrils. Repeat for a few minutes or breath cycles.
\n\n\n\n
Next, begin to observe your thoughts and feelings. Did the way you were feeling shift by breathing and putting your attention wherever you felt sensation? Our emotions are like a small child tugging at the hem of our shirt; if we ignore them they just scream louder. We can’t change what’s happening, but with practice we can shift the way we relate to these emotions by giving them space to be acknowledged and focusing on our breath.
\n\n\n\n
Intention
\n\n\n\n
The final step towards finding your center is to set your intention for how you would like to respond to life’s challenges. Your intention might be to stop and slow down long enough to make a clear decision or to stay grounded in a state of acceptance. Maybe you have realized that you need to eliminate some activities and other commitments so that you have time in your schedule for relaxation and reflection. What would you like to experience? Be very specific. What choices would you like to make in the present moment? What possibilities are available to you?
\n\n\n\n
From this place of clarity, peace, and balance you can respond rather than react to life’s challenges. Whether you’re having a difficult conversation with a coworker, experiencing tension in personal relationships, or the health of the world is compromised… this state of being is always here within you. We all fall back on old behavior patterns but we can choose to be compassionate and practice radical self-love throughout the process. With practice, you can increase the neuroplasticity of your brain and create new neural pathways into the future state you want to experience.
\n\n\n\n
As we bravely continue on our individual mindfulness journeys, each time we enter a meditative state coming from a place of awareness, curiosity, and unconditional love we create a positive ripple effect that feeds into the collective consciousness. We are all interconnected by the human experience and together we can create a world of peace and harmony.
\n\n\n\n
It all starts with your conscious breath.
\n\n\n\n
If you need some music to ease your tension, enjoy the peaceful sounds of mind, body & soul on YouTube.
\n\n\n\n

\n\n

\n\n\n\n
Source: Tris Thorp/The Chopra Center
\n\n\n\n

\n",
