Thompson who wrote, “When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.” It couldn’t apply more to the work of Sufjan Stevens, who seems to have found a new way of communicating with his 2010 release, The Age of Adz (pronounced “oddz”). After a few gentle guitar notes on the opener, “Futile Devices,” Adz turns towards electronics that connect and splinter Stevens’ worldview and psychic well-being. The percussion turns brittle for “Too Much” and the spacey reverbs laced throughout give things a disjointed feel as the title track, “I Walked” and the choir-doom of “Now That I’m Older” spread out across the universe. “Get Real Get Right” sounds like a dance party where everyone freaks out and speaks in tongues. This child of Talking Heads loves his rhythms but he also loves his avant-garde textures. “Bad Communication” lives up to its title. “Vesuvius” and “All By Myself” find an inner calm amongst the chaos. “Impossible Soul” is an incredibly long closing track that further underscores Stevens’ grand ambitions."

"standard": "The Kronos Quartet have a long history of crossing multiple boundaries to collaborate with artists outside of their classical/avant-garde sphere. This time, they commissioned material from The National’s Bryce Dessner. The first three pieces here are minimalist in nature but have different points of inspiration. The terse title piece is centered around Dessner's family’s flight from Russia and Poland to America during WWII—the title “Aheym” is Yiddish for “homeward”—and he creates music that's often tense but never over the edge. “Little Blue Something” is a tip of the hat to the early Czech music, while “Tenebre” rotates through a series of highly textured ideas that concludes with vocals by Sufjan Stevens and multiple overdubs of the quartet. Based on the setting of a poem by Chilean poet Vicente Huidobro, the final piece features Kronos, a band led by Dessner, and The Brooklyn Youth; it builds using interlocking figures with different groups sending ideas back and forth. The National’s hardcore fans may find this interesting, but Aheym is truly a contemporary classical effort, and a good one at that."

"standard": "The young composer Nico Muhly is known for his many musical activities: writing pieces for classical groups, collaborating with innovative pop artists such as Björk and Antony, and crafting tracks that can be thought of as indie rock or electronica or New Music. Scoring films is yet another one of the busy composer’s endeavors. The Reader tells the tale of a young man’s passionate affair with an older woman and his encounter with her years later, after World War II, when she is on trial for a war crime. Muhly’s subtle music doesn’t resemble the work on his ambitious 2008 release, Mothertongue, or the grandiose orchestral sounds another composer might have written to accompany The Reader’s intense tale. That’s not to say that the score is always low-key; on “Tram At Dawn,” winds, strings, and harp swirl to create a sense of mysterious excitation, while “Reading” fuses romanticism and minimalism to rousing effect. Pensive piano, yearning oboe, a somber trombone statement, and dramatic bass accents mark the melancholy closer, “Who Was She?”"

"standard": "Violist Nadia Sirota has a strong presence on New York's contemporary music scene. She’s played with numerous artists, including Meredith Monk and Alarm Will Sound; she also hosts an Internet radio show on WQXR. And in 2009, she released her highly praised debut, First Things First. On the follow-up, Baroque, Sirota performs pieces written for her by five young composers. She worked closely with producer Valgeir Sigurosson, who provided electronic processing on the album. Judd Greenstein’s “In Teaching Others We Teach Ourselves” is for seven violas. Sirota dubbed all of the parts; the layers of arco and pizzicato create a sound world that's lyrical, lush, and charged with post-minimalist energy. Missy Mazzoli's “Tooth and Nail” at times displays the rhythmic drive of baroque music, and the piece incorporates bass lines that recall organ pedal tones. Calm, baroque-like organ comes into play on Nico Muhly’s “Etude 3,” but the mood is complicated by an agitated viola. The closing track is Daniel Bjarnason’s concerto-derived “Sleep Variations,” in which Sirota’s playing has been edited into a dazzling composition. "

"standard": "Nico Muhly is known both as a classical composer and as an arranger who’s worked with pop acts such as Björk, Grizzly Bear, and Antony & The Johnsons. His 2008 release, Mothertongue, with its combination of minimalism, folk, electronica, and other elements, is hard to place stylistically. But A Good Understanding focuses on another dimension of Muhly’s musical personality: the lover and composer of choral music. Musical director Grant Gershon and the Los Angeles Master Chorale perform six of the young artist’s works on this thoroughly enjoyable album. It’s not only the vocal music that shines here: percussion and organ bring interesting textures and rhythms to the title cut, and “Senex Puerum Portabat” features striking brass writing that nicely contrasts with the choir. “Expecting the Main Things from You” compellingly sets the poetry of Walt Whitman to music. The first movement’s percussive effects, which lean toward the programmatic, lend color to the overall sound. After a quiet interlude, forceful, minimalist rhythms appear in the third section, before the piece closes with celestial vocals, bells and strings."
